State Fair Treats to Make at Home

Updated: Nov 24, 2019

There are so many things that I love about the State Fair of Texas! It's an annual tradition for us - one that we look forward to for weeks. Sometimes, we load up the kids and go, and sometimes the hubby and I make a date of it alone. Either way, it always ends up being a wonderful and memorable time.

This year, we felt like our youngest was the perfect age to come along and enjoy the day. Landry got to try a real Fletcher Corny Dog, which he rapidly devoured, and washed down with his first-ever taste of sweet tea - it was DEFINITELY a splurge day for us all!

But, sadly, the Fair only lasts a few short weeks, and then it's gone. So here are a few easy homespun substitutes to help you get through until those rickety rollercoasters start rolling again!

You will definitely want to try these funnel cakes from Taste of Home. If you don't have a pitcher with a really narrow spout, pouring from a sturdy measuring cup works, too! You can also try all sorts of toppings - I like apple pie filling and caramel or strawberries and whipped cream!

Think you have to have a fancy machine to make cotton candy? NOPE! All you need is a whisk, a pair of wire cutters, and some simple ingredients!

Your family will go crazy over these homemade corn dogs, and you can easily substitute the standard hot dog with something a little more healthy ...before you deep fry it!

And let's not forget one of the newer stars of the fair food lineup - fried s'mores! These are such a huge hit with kids of all ages.

If you can't make it to the fair, or just can't make it to the next one without an indulgent fair food fix, these recipes can definitely fill the need! And if you really want to experience the State Fair of Texas from a distance, check out this State Fair of Texas Tour and Review with The Legend.
